‘Basyang’ victims continue to rise

THE number of deaths and families affected by the onslaught of Typhoon Basyang continues to rise
based on the update issued yesterday by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council
(NDRRMC).

NDRRMC spokesperson Romina Marasigan said the death rose to nine, and a total of 4,895
families or 21,155 persons were affected in 94 barangays in Region VII and Caraga.
    
Of the said number of affected families, 4,889 or 21,133 persons were served inside and
outside 102 evacuation centers.
    
In Caraga, a total of 511 families were pre-emptively evacuated due to Typhoon Basyang’s
fury.
    
The NDRRMC also said that they are still verifying the number or deaths as well as those
wounded caused by the typhoon.
    
Marasigan said that as of press time, they earlier recorded four deaths and six injured.
    
At least 4,642 passengers were stranded in several ports in Northern Mindanao and eastern
and southern Visayas.
    
Marasigan said the operation center of the NDRRMC remains on red alert status to monitor the
areas battered by the typhoon.
    
As of 2 a.m. yesterday, Basyang maintained its strength as it traversed over Sulu Sea
towards west northwest direction.
    
Public storm signal number 1 was hoisted over Palawan,  including Calamian, Cuyo Group of
Islands, southern section of Negros Occidental, southern section of Negros Oriental and northern
section of  Zamboanga del Norte.
