SENATE Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano believes that People’s Champ, Rep.Manny Pacquiao, is one of the greatest fighters in boxing history even as some sports analysts are not convinced by his victory over Mexican boxing idol Juan Miguel Marquez.

The Pambansang Kamao won by unanimous decision over Mexico’s Dinamita during the 12 round boxing bout held in Las Vegas in the United States.  Kailangan lang natin tandaan na may kanya-kanyang style sa paglalaban at mukhang si Marquez ay huli ang style ni Manny Pacquiao,” Cayetano said. 

“But that doesn’t make him less of a fighter. Even the statistics show that Pacquiao is the real winner. The problem is that we had raised our expectations so high in the last few days since almost all of the analysts said that it would be easy (for Pacquiao) to beat Marquez and that is why most got disappointed with the result,” he said.

Cayetano added: “It just happens that he faced a fighter (Marquez) who already read his style. I’m still looking forward to the possibility of Pacquiao finally facing Floyd Mayweather Jr.  I think when that happens, Pacquiao will make sure that he proves to the world how great a fighter he is.”

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III believe that Pacquiao became “over confident” during his third boxing bout with Marquez that he almost lost to Marquez. 

“Kamuntik na s’ya (Pacquiao, matalo) eh. Kamuntik na talaga. Kaya napalakas ang buntong hininga n’ya nu’ng s’ya ang dineklara na s’ya na ang nanalo. Ang mahirap sa isang tao ‘pag ikaw matagumpay palaging nagkakaroon ka ng over confidence,” Enrile said.

“You cannont predict your future. Any day is not your day. Dapat mag-iingat siya dahil di araw araw nasa iyo ang tagumpay. Hindi mo kontrolado ang sarili mo. May mas makapangyarihan sa namamahala sa buhay mo,” he added.

The Senate chief said that he stopped watching the boxing match at Round 5 when he saw that Pacquiao was apparently losing.”Hanggang sa 5th round. Sabi ko, ako kay Marquez.”

“The root of the issue kasi ‘yung mga “pa-ra-rap” masyadong na hype na knock out (na si Marquez) the 4th round, sa 5th round, sa 6th round. Huwag daw kukurap baka 1st round lang. Pero pagkatapos ang first three rounds parang lamang ang kalaban. What do you expect? Talagang magkakaroon ng kontrobersya,” Sotto said.

He added: “Talagang mabigat lang kalaban si Marquez. Unang laban palang nila hirap na s’ya (Pacquiao). Second fight ganu’n din hirap din s’ya. Counter puncher ito.  Mabilis din ito at tumatanggap ng suntok. Iyun ang problema kaso ang press release ng mga “pa-ra-rap” ni Manny wala kayang-kaya ‘yan. First round lang tulog ‘yan. Ayun nu’ng hindi mapatulog, 12th round na hindi mapatulog, kinabahan silang bigla.
