SAN Beda College opens its quest for a 'four-peat' by playing in the first two consecutive playdates of the NCAA seniors basketball tournament.
The Red Lions take on season host College of Saint Benilde on June 22 at the Mall of Asia Arena, before battling dangerous Lyceum on June 24 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Winners of six of last seven NCAA championships, San Beda seeks to become to first team in 17 years to cop four consecutive titles in the country's oldest collegiate athletic league under new coach Boyet Fernandez.
The Lions-Blazers season-opening match is set at 4 p.m. right after the hour-long ceremonies prepared by St. Benilde with a theme 'Our Stars will Shine in 89'.
The other opening day game features last season's runner-up Letran facing a rebuilding San Sebastian College side at 6 p.m.
It will be the second straight year that the Knights and Stags, who squared off in the Season 88 Final Four, will cross paths in the opening day.
San Beda and Letran will face off for the first time since Game 3 of last year's best-of-three title series, at the end of the first round on August 22.
The Lions became the NCAA’s winningest team, clinching their 17th title by nipping the Knights in three games.
Four teams will unveil new coaches for this season.
Aside from San Beda's Fernandez, who took over from Ronnie Magsanoc, Letran parades Caloy Garcia in lieu of Louie Alas, Mapua's Atoy Co replacing Chito Victolero and St. Benilde's Gabby Velasco for Richard del Rosario.
Topex Robinson, meanwhile, is returning to the San Sebastian bench after leaving abruptly last season.
