THE Senate has formally archived the “articles of impeachment” filed by the House of Representatives against former Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez who resigned last month.
The senators approved the archiving of House Resolution 105 after Majority Floor Leader Vicente “Tito” Sotto III said it was impractical for the chamber to convene as impeachment court since Gutierrez has already resigned.
Sotto also concurred on the proposal of the House prosecution panel, in a letter dated May 4, to declare the impeachment trial as “moot and academic.”
The Senate session resumed yesterday morning after almost more than one and half month of their Lenten break.
Gutierrez’s resignation took effect May 6 after she quit her post on April 29 or 10 days before her impeachment trial.
Also in yesterday’s session, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile welcomed Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson who had been absent for over a year in the Senate after an arrest warrant was issued against him for the killings of publicist Salvador “Bubby” Dacer and driver, Emmanuel Corbito.
