BEFORE everything gets too late, Globalport has decided to look for a new import, someone who could deliver when needed most.
According to basketball operations manager Eric Arejola, team manager BJ Manalo has already started making contacts with agents abroad for the replacement of an ineffective Justine Williams.
“Naghahanap na sila,” said Arejola, referring to Manalo and the agents.
Team owner Mikee Romero himself has hinted his frustrations over the performances of Williams, who could not seem to spark the locals.
As a result, the Batang Pier have lost three of their first five outings, including back-to-back inside a week — 79-99 to Talk ‘N Text and 89-90 to Meralco.
Import is supposed to make an impact with his explosive play, especially on offense, something that Williams failed to flash in Batang Pier’s first five outings.
By becoming the focus of the opponent’s defense, the locals would be left open to deliver the goods. Not so with Batang Pier, whose locals, including Japeth Aguilar and Gary David, could not also score like their import.
“Di ako happy sa import. Tignan ko, pero magpapalit kami,” said Romero as quoted by the number one sports website in the country. “Mahina eh, kulang sa opensa.”
After exploding for 23 points, 23 rebounds, and eight block shots in Globalport’s 89-80 win over Barangay Ginebra, Williams’ numbers suddenly dipped.
His output against the Bolts was a new low among the imports this conference as he tallied only five points to go with 13 rebounds, eight blocks, and an assist.
