CABANATUAN City -- Three men riding a Toyota Hi-Ace commuter van were nabbed while transporting banned narra flitches in a commuter van in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija, last Tuesday.
Provincial Public Safety Company commander Chief Insp. Edilmar G. Alviar identified those arrested as Julius Buenaventura, alias Bong, 45, driver, of 1513C P. Santos St., Makati City; and his helpers, Ginzer Arnedo, alias Gin, 29, of Bgy. Pengue Ruyu, Tuguegarao City, Cagayan; and Janmark Arnedo alias Imo, 36, of Bgy. Attulayan Norte, Tuguegarao City.
The trio were subsequently collared following a brief chase that ensued after they evaded a police checkpoint put up by the 2nd Maneuver Platoon-Carranglan PAAC-PPSC in Bgy. Puncan, Carranglan.
Alviar said the operation was immediately set up after getting a tip from a concerned citizen that a white van carrying undocumented lumber coming from Tuguegarao would pass along the national highway in Carranglan that day.
Prior to the arrest, he said his men flagged down the approaching van for verification but instead of stopping, it sped past the checkpoint, thus triggering a brief chase until the suspects were cornered.
During inspection, the van yielded 21 pieces of banned narra flitches with a volume of 325 board feet, approximately valued at P32,500.
Alviar said the suspects were immediately arrested after they could not present the pertinent lumber transport documents.
He said the seized lumber was turned over to the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office-Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the Science City of Muñoz while the suspects were slapped with violations of PD 705 (Forestry law) and Art. 151 of the Revised Penal Code (disobedience) before the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office here.
