ALMA Moreno says she was really devastated when she learned that her eldest son, Mark Anthony Fernandez, was arrested for possession of marijuana and is detained at the Angeles City Jail. She thanked everyone who expressed their sympathy for Mark, including Lorna Tolentino, Mark’s stepmom who also visited him in prison with his half brothers, Rap and Renz Fernandez.

Her own kids, Vandolph Quizon (with Dolphy), Yeoj and Winwyn Marquez (with Joey Marquez), also visited their half brother. Alma now often stays in Angeles to be close to Mark and she wants to clarify that Mark is not getting any special treatment in jail.

“Basta kung ano ang patakaran nila sa loob ng jail, sinusunod namin,” she says. “Hindi kami humihingi ng special treatment. Worried lang ako kasi walang ganang kumain si Mark. Kahit anong sarap ng pagkaing dalhin ko sa kanya, hindi siya masyadong nakakakain. I’m just asking for prayers para sana, malampasan namin ang lahat ng ito.”

JULIE ANNE ON BENJAMIN: WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET

JULIE ANNE San Jose is having a concert with Christian Bautista for the first time, “When Julie Anne Meets Christian”, at the Kia Theatre on November 11. The two of them have lots of things in common. They were both discovered in a singing contest, Julie Anne in “Pop Star Kids” and Christian in “Star in a Million”. Both of them didn’t win but they went on to become more popular than the winners in their respective talent searches.

Both of them also went into acting on TV and the movies. Both also won Diamond Record awards, meaning, their album went on to sell 150,000 copies.         Julie Anne is now tagged as Asia’s Pop Sweetheart while Christian is tagged as Asia’s Romantic Balladeer. With their achievements in the local and international scenes, concertgoers can expect world- class performances in their first concert together, with Marvin Caldito as director and Marc Lopez as musical director, produced by Dreamstar Events and GMA Network. Tickets are now available on Ticketnet.

How does Julie Anne feel sharing the same concert stage with Christian? “It’s an honor na makasama ang isang singer who has also made a name for himself in other countries and I’m excited to do a show with him,” she says. “We’ve had duets in ‘Party Pilipinas’ and ‘Sunday All Stars’ before, but it’s only now na magkakasama kami sa isang full show. I admire him for being so driven, so professional, so focused sa kanyang craft.”

What do they have in store for their audience? “May solo spots kami and may numbers ding magkasama kami. We prepared a special production number na theatrical ang dating, combining love songs from the courtship stage to sweet-sweetan, then to arguments and breakup, and finally, reconciliation. Lahat ng various emotions, pagdaraanan namin doon.”

Everyone knows she’s now playing beautiful music with Benjamin Alves, with whom she started the new soap, “Pinulot Ka Lang sa Lupa”, that will start airing on November 7. Will she invite Benjamin to join them in the show? “I’ve invited him to watch, but not only him but also other artist friends para suportahan naman nila ang show namin ni Christian.”

“Pinulot Ka Lang sa Lupa” is a remake of a 1987 Regal movie directed by Ishmael Bernal. Will she do the Maricel Soriano role? “No, I’m assigned the role of Lorna Tolentino as Santina. LJ Reyes gets the Maricel role as Angeli. Benjamin plays Ephraim, originally played by Gabby Concepcion and the role of Eddie Garcia is now played naman by Victor Neri. I’m thankful to GMA for giving me another acting project after I did ‘Buena Familia’.”

So what’s the real score between her and Benjamin now that they see each other regularly while taping the show? “We’re good, we’re okay. We have many things in common. Pareho kaming mahilig sa music. We can jive and talk about anything. What you see is what you get.”

ALDEN: THIS IS MORE THAN WHAT I ASKED FOR

ALDEN Richards just received a Diamond record award for his first album with GMA Records which sold 150,000 CDs and includes the big hit “Wish I May”. Now, his new album, “Say It Again” with “Rescue Me” as the hit single, has also quickly turned gold, prompting Alden to post in his social media account: “Never in my life have I imagined that I’d record songs and release albums. This is more than what I asked for, sabi ko nun ‘Kahit mag-gold lang, kuntento na ako.’ Sometimes faith really does its magic for you when you believe. God really works in unimaginable ways.”

He’s also said to be the reason why the ratings of “Encantadia” suddenly soared after he started appearing in the telefantasya as a Mulawin. Although Alden remains humble and denies it, saying the show is really good that’s why it’s rating better. We won’t be surprised if GMA would now extend his stay in the show.

Now, Alden also holds the singular distinction of being the only Pinoy selected as one of the hosts of the 21st Asian Television Awards (ATA) to be held at Suntec Convention Centre in Singapore on Dec. 2. He will be joining Malaysian-born actor Adrian Pang; TV personality Stephanie Carrington; and multi-lingual host Baki Zainal.

Some of the performers at the event are multiple Golden Melody Awards winner JJ Lin and international pop phenomenon Charli XCX. According to its official site, ATA was launched in 1996 and they have been recognizing excellence in programming, production and performance. The winners are determined by a panel with over 60 judges from different countries. The results are tabulated and audited by international auditing firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

The awards night will later be aired on December 11, 9.30 p.m. on GMA News TV.

ZANJOE: ONE’S SEXUAL PREFERENCE IS NO BIG ISSUE

ZANJOE Marudo plays a gay doctor in love with Sam Milby in his new movie, “The Third Party”, now currently showing in theaters. Didn’t he have any reluctance in accepting the role? “No, na-excite nga ako kasi it’s something new. I’ve played a gay role in ‘Bromance’, pero comedy ‘yun. Ito, more serious in portraying a gay romance. My character, si Christian, is a caring and loving person na very close to his family. Hindi naman siya isang balahurang bakla.”

Isn’t he worried folks might suspect that he’s really gay? “I really wouldn’t mind. These days, hindi na big issue ang sexual preference mo. Balewala na kung bading ka ba o lalaki ka. I have many gay friends and they’re good people.”

What can he say about reports that his last girlfriend, Bea Alonzo, is now playing beautiful music with Gerald Anderson? “I don’t know if it’s true, but labas na ako roon. Matagal na kaming wala ni Bea, we’ve both moved on and we’ve remained friends naman. We remain civil to each other kapag nagkikita kami. Kung totoo ‘yun, happy ako for them.”
