AN Army soldier was killed while nine others were wounded when a grenade they used in a training exploded the other day inside the Army Reserve Command (Arescom) the other day in General Santos City.
The fatality was identified as Technical Sergeant Pablo M. Balansang, of Poblacion Alabael, Sarangani.
Taken to Socsargen Hospital for treatment were T/Sgt. Bonifacio Soriano, T/Sgt. Rolando L. Camoro, Sgt. Norjan G. Salik, Cpls. Jonard C. Barlizo and Michael P. Camus, Pfcs. Jovito D. Besana, Abdul Basser and Ramon S. Baylon and Private Francisco T. Martinez.
A report from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) showed that the incident occurred at around 4:20 p.m. inside the classroom of Explosive Ordnance Reconnaissance Agent (EORA) Training located at H12RCDG Arescom in Purok 5, Asinan, Rajah Buayan, General Santos City.
Police Regional Office (PRO) 12 spokesman Supt. Romeo Galgo said the training area is an old airport run by the Arescom.
Initial investigation showed that the victims were undergoing bomb demonstration training with other Army reservists when the explosion occurred.
Accordingly, Balansag was holding the grenade, as part of his demonstration, when he accidentally hit the pin that triggered the explosion.
The victims were immediately taken to the nearest hospital.
