FAR Eastern University weathered a slow start in the first two sets and dominated the third frame to carve out a 27-25, 25-20, 25-11 victory over San Sebastian and advance to the semifinals in the Shakey’s V-League Collegiate Conference yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Bernadeth Pons, still under the weather, came through with 17 points and nine digs while Remy Palma added 14 points, including two blocks, as the Lady Tamaraws got back on track to improve their carryover record to 3-1 in the quarterfinals.

Joining defending champion National University in the semis, FEU remains on course in its bid to regain the crown it won in 2014.

Lady Tamaraws coach Shaq delos Santos was delighted the way his troops showed character to rebound from last Wednesday’s 17-25, 26-24, 25-14, 18-25, 11-15 loss to the Lady Bulldogs that ended their perfect run in the tournament.

“Yung maibalik ang totoong game namin, kasi sa four straight wins namin, maganda. Yung last game namin sa NU, nag-off at may players na may injury at sakit,” said Delos Santos.

Despite dealing with flu, Pons displayed her usual game, especially in the third set, where the Lady Stags could not find ways to stop her.

“Naibigay ang best niya,” said Delos Santos on Pons.

After blowing leads in the first two sets, San Sebastian was never the same and was just out of it when FEU handily claimed the third set.

With the Lady Tamaraws way ahead, 20-8, the Lady Stags waved the white flag after coach Clint Malazo pulled out their ace hitter Grethcel Soltones.

Aside from Palma, FEU’s other middle hitter Jerrili Malabanan shone, scoring two blocks for a six-point production. Her service ace, one of three in the game, gave the Lady Tamaraws the opening set victory after playing catch-up all throughout.

“Happy siyempre dahil talagang pinu-push namin in every practice. Hindi puwedeng maging limited ang taong aasahan namin. Kailangang mag-trabaho, especially sa blockings, kailangang magsipag sila,” said Delos Santos.

The Lady Stags, who were led by Soltones’ 12 points, dropped to 2-2. San Sebastian needs to beat University of the Philippines on Wednesday to clinch a semis berth.

In the Spikers’ Turf, Madz Gampong and Bryan Bagunas combined for 23 points as NU eliminated reigning NCAA titlist University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, 25-21, 25-22, 25-22, to secure a semifinals berth in Group A.

NCBA defeated San Beda, 25-20, 23-25, 30-28, 36-34, in the battle of also-rans to wound up its Group B stint with two wins against three losses.
