FCVBA completes sweep

DEFENDING champion Filipino-Chinese Veterans  Basketball Association  (FCVBA)  completed a sweep of the elimination round in  three  age  divisions in the 25th Asean Veterans  basketball  tournament  at the Chiang Kai Shek College gym.

Former PBA MVP Kenneth Duremdes finished  with 16 points, three rebounds and  two assists as the FCVBA 40 years old and above team  defeated KLVBC-Malaysia  for its  second   straight win and  the top  spot in   the seven-team  competition.
   
Duremdes was named as Freego Jeans “Best Player of the Game” for the second straight time.
   
Two other  FCVBA teams   -- 50-above and 60-above --  also kept their  perfect records  at the end of the  elimination of the five-day, five-nation  tournament organized by Headstart Sports Academy and sponsored by Rain or Shine, Ironcon Builders, Freego Jeans and Philippine Airlines.
   
Bong Tan finished with 30 points and 10 assists as the FCVBA 50-above team routed KLVBC-Malaysia, 85-54,  for its third straigth win .
   
Tan,  also the president and chief executive officer of Tanduay Distillers, was also  named  Freego “Best Player of the Game.”
   
FCVBA 40-above  team also won  over ZAAP-Thailand, 77-49, last Aug.  22 Meteor Pontianak,  77-49, last Aug. 23.
   
Former La Salle University standout  Kenneth Yap scattered  15 points as the FCVBA squad  humbled Brunei, 82-49,  for its third win and a sweep in the 60-above category.
   
Last Tuesday, FCVBA 60-above  team  o verwhelmed Hatyai-Thailand, 50-27, behind  Noli Banate’s 10-point and eight-rebound performance.
   
FCVBA 60-above team  also  hurdled  Sarawak Hornbill-Malaysia, 42-25.
   
Tournament director Edster Sy of  Headstart  Sports  said  the semifinal games in  the 40-above, 50-above and 60-above  categories will be played today  with  the  No. 1 team battling the  No. 2 team of each group.
   
The  elimination  round of the three-team  65-above  category will also end today.
