THE passenger van started swerving on the road like a helpless soul possessed. As it careened out of control, passenger John Ray Sobonio must have felt nauseous, as if his head was coming loose. Then the vehicle crashed into a concrete wall.
When the smoke had cleared, Sobonio lay bloodied and lifeless. His head was nowhere near his mangled body. A radio report revealed that 10 other passengers -- including a pregnant commuter and another who had just undergone surgery -- were injured in the road mishap that occurred in Malandag, Malungon, Sarangani.
Sobonio, believed to be in his late 20s and a resident of Bgy. Banate, Malungon, had bought undisclosed items in General Santos City when he met his tragic fate. The report added that he was beheaded due to the strong impact of the crash. He was reportedly on his way to Davao City.
The injured victims were rushed to a hospital in General Santos City and at the Malungon Municipal Hospital.
According to the radio report, investigation showed that the passenger van (ACU 9767) zigzagged for no apparent reason until it crashed into the concrete wall of a swimming resort.
