FAR Eastern University scrambled past University of the Philippines, 27-25, 25-22, 18-25, 23-25, 15-8, to complete a four-game sweep of Group B last night in the Shakey’s V-League Collegiate Conference before a good-sized crowd at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The Lady Tamaraws saw the Lady Maroons crumble in the fifth set to prevail in a duel of unbeaten UAAP squads.
“Yung receive namin talaga, yung first ball na kailangang naming madala ng maayos sa setter, yun ang No. 1 problema namin. Yung service, hindi gaanong ka-consistent,” said FEU coach Shaq delos Santos.
Toni Rose Basas led the Lady Tamaraws with 24 hits and 17 digs while Remy Palma had two blocks and two service aces for a 15-point effort.
With its perfect elims card, FEU will have a good carryover record in the six-team quarterfinals.
Isa Molde and Diana Carlos had 20 points apiece for UP, which ended its Group B stint with a 3-1 card.
Using a different starting unit, the Lady Tamaraws’ failed to deliver in the early goings as they trailed badly, 10-19, after Lady Maroons ace Molde drilled in a service winner.
With the old reliables Pons and Basas taking over from the starting six along with libero Buding Duremdes, FEU made a huge fightback as it saved four set points to extend the opening frame at 24-24.
An Angel Cayuna service error put the Lady Maroons ahead for the final time, 25-24, before the Lady Tamaraws’ clinched the last three points of the first set, with Basas and Heather Guino-o nailing the crucial kills sandwhiched by a Nicole Tiamzon service fault.
FEU also won the second set after breaking away from a 22-22 tie before UP, with Molde leading the charge was able to close it out in the third frame to extend the match.
The Lady Maroons averted another meltdown in the fourth, as the Lady Tamaraws, down 20-24, saved three set points before Carlos nailed a kill to force a deciding set.
