PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte early yesterday morning restated his reasons for allowing late President  Ferdinand Marcos’ burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani amid opposition from his detractors.

In Davao City, while visiting the wake of soldiers killed in a clash with communist insurgents, the President said being a soldier and former president the late strongman is qualified for burial at the heroes’ cemetery in Taguig City.

“I will allow Marcos to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. He was a soldier. He was there to fight for his country,” he said. He added he will let the Marcos family decide when to bury their patriarch.

Duterte said that he has already given the go-signal for the Marcos family to bury the former President at the Libingan in time for his  99th birth  anniversary.

The President also indicated that he will allow protest rallies against the Marcos burial as long as they are peaceful. He said authorities should ensure smooth flow of traffic and keep the protesters out of harm’s way.

“Kahit isang buwan pa silang mag-rally,” Duterte remarked.

Earlier former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. clarified  that the burial of his father is still in the “planning stage” although reports earlier claimed Duterte had allowed Marcos’ burial on September 18.
