Hw r d Texters? Dey r fined! PDF Print E-mail

THE Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) yesterday slapped dethroned champion Talk ‘N Text with a total fine of P1 million for walking out and forfeiting Game 4 of its KFC-PBA Philippine Cup quarter-finals series against Ginebra.

Aside from that, the league forfeited the Tropang Texters’ gate receipts and TV revenues for that contest.

For the walkout, Commissioner Renauld ‘Sonny’ Barrios penalized Talk ‘N Text with a P500,000 fine — the minimum amount stated in the league’s constitution — and then slapped the franchise with an additional P500,000 penalty for the lost income the league suffered and for the t-shirts TNT supporters wore in Game 5 with bold ‘BE FAIR’ words printed on it.

Talk ‘N Text stands to lose another P200,000-to-250,000 in penalties, the usual share a franchise receives from gate receipts in a playoff game.

This is by far the largest amount the PBA has slapped on a team in 35 years of its existence for an offense that only occurred once before – Ginebra in Game 6 of the Third Conference Finals against Shell. Ginebra was fined a minimum of P500,000 for the walkout that clinched for Shell the title.

A similar incident also happened in 2006, when Red Bull walked out of its game against San Miguel Beer in the Philippine Cup semi-finals. The Barakos, however, came back to finish the game and even went on to win the series on a buzzer-beating shot from Junthy Valenzuela.

“There are established rules and procedures to properly ventilate a team’s disagreement with officiating so that the fans do not become innocent and unwilling victims of a team’s protest over calls,” Barrios said.

Barrios explained that of the total fines, the P500,000 will be awarded to Ginebra as payment under section 32 of the PBA constitution. The other P500,000 will be given to the Players’ Educational Trust Fund while the gate receipts will be equally di-vided among the 9 other ball clubs of the PBA.

Barrios pointed out that the PBA and its teams serve different audiences, foremost of which is the watching public, who happens to be the lifeblood of the league and whose interest the league has sworn to protect and hold as primordial.

Although more than P1 million in fines may look immaterial to a rich franchise like Talk ‘N Text, the effect on its image may be lasting.

The walkout also will come as a blow to the leadership of Manny V. Pangilinan, who not only represents Talk ‘N Text being the team’s owner but also acts as a towering figure in the sport as head of the country’s governing body for amateur basketball – the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas. He is also the chairman of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP).

Pangilinan, however, has said that he has no regrets over the approval he gave to walk out in Game 4. At the same time, though, he was gracious in defeat when the Kings eliminated them, 113-100, in Game 5.

The walkout was sparked by a flagrant foul 2 committed by Ranidel de Ocampo against Ronald Tubid.
