Harbour Centre CEO Mikee Romero – without a doubt the most successful amateur basketball owner of his generation – may end up wearing another hat as a group of shooters is ardently grooming him to become the new president of the Philippine National Shooting Association (PNSA).
Known for his managerial savvy and passion for the sport, Romero is perceived to be the right guy to handle the shooting association following the resignation of long-time president Art Macapagal the other day.
A plus factor for Romero is that he has strong ties with some high-ranking officials in the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) – reason why most shooters are inclined to endorse him once the Board decides to call for an election.
“If he’s acceptable to the other groups of the association, Mikee can do so much to the sport, we need a young and vibrant leader like Mikee,” said PNSA vice president (for international) and moving target chair James Chua. “We’re hoping that other members of the Board will support Mikee. Our group is strongly endorsing him to be part of the Board.”
Though Romero is a lifetime member of the association, he can’t be nominated to the presidency right away since he’s not a member of the 15-man Board.
The association has five groups – namely moving target, rifle, pistol, non-Olympic events and practical – each one of them has three seats in the Board.
Chua, however, said all members of the moving target in the Board, including himself, are willing to step down to install Romero.
“I’m willing and ready to give way to make Mikee as a director. In that way, he will be legible to run for president,” said Chua, who expects the Board chairman to convene a meeting anytime soon to fill the post left by Macapagal.
