THIS lefty Rain or Shine stalwart who seems to be indispensable to Gilas Pilipinas with his admirable knack for outside shooting is on the right track of recovery from ‘groin’ injury.
“Ang sarap. Nakakagalaw na ako, nakakatalon na. Konting strengthening na lang, okay na,” said Jeff Chan as quoted in twitter by ABC5’s Carlo Pamintuan who is with the ‘touring 14’ in Karpenisi, Greece.
Actually, the injury that Chan incurred during their title-clinching Game 6 victory in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup had prevented him from joining in the ensuing Gilas practices in Meralco Gym.
With Gilas then already without Paul Lee due to foot injury and Marcio Lassiter due to illness, Chan’s going on and off during the Gilas’ early build-up in Manila made the coaching staff wary of the situation.
Turns out, Chan was just buying enough time to rest so he could join Gilas in its three-nation European tour serving as the most important part of its build-up for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament which Manila is hosting from July 5-10 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
“Ako naman hindi ko gaano pinipilit yung katawan ko dahil pinaghahandaan ko yung pinaka mahalagang training sa Europe. Reserve ko sarili ko sa camp,” Chan had told People’s Journal/Tonight during a lull in their practice at the Meralco Gym before.
Apparently, Chan’s approach is working pretty well in the Karpenisi training camp that he is now eager to play for the flag and country come the Manila joust.
“Gusto kong magpalakas pa ng katawan. Excited talaga ako to be given the chance to represent the country again lalo na makapaglaro sa home natin,” said Chan. “Isang malaking karangalan yan para sa akin.”
Chan also expressed his gratitude to the Gilas coaching staff led by head coach Tab Baldwin.
