Hope foils NU, reaches Shakey’s volley semis

Mighty Sports-Hope Christian School leaned on Desiree Cheng and Mae Basarte as it repulsed National U, 25-19, 25-18, in a duel of unbeaten teams to clinch the first semifinal berth in the Shakey’s Girls’ Volley League NCR leg at the Toby’s Sports Arena in Pasig City last weekend.

Cheng came away with 18 hits, including nine kills and four blocks, while Basarte added 10 points highlighted by five kills as the HCS spikers rolled into the Final Four with a 5-0 mark in the event sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and organized by Metro Sports.

NU dropped to 4-1, enabling De La Salle-Zobel to stay in the semis hunt in Pool A with a 3-1 card following a scrambling 24-26, 25-20, 25-11 victory over St. James College-Paranaque (SJP).

Kim Dy topscored for DLZ with 14 points and six kills while Julienne Calugcug came through with six blocks and three attacks to rally the Alabang-based tossers, who ousted the SJP (2-3) side from the semis race of the tournament backed by Toby’s, Mikasa and Asics.

Colegio San Agustin, meanwhile, zeroed in on the first semis slot in Pool B as it subdued King’s Montessori School (KMS), 25-19, 25-15, behind Ana Gopico and Misha dela Torre’s combined 19 hits. CSA improved to 4-1.

Angelicum College is in second with a 4-0 slate while KMS and University of the East remained in the race with identical 3-2 cards.

In other results, MGC New Life Academy (MGC), behind Teri Cua and Kyla Tui, beat St. James Academy-Malabon (SJM) (0-3) for a 1-3 mark, while Rizal High School also picked its first win three games with a 25-19, 25-23 victory over winless Elizabeth Seton School.

UE scored two victories to keep its semis hopes alive, routing SJM, 25-3, 25-13, and then downing UP Integrated School, 25-14, 25-16, while KMS thumped MGC, 25-8, 25-14.
