THE Philippine Star Group and Nougat Candy pulled off spectacular victories over their respective rivals in the Mandaluyong City Athletics Association (MCAA) 2012 Cong. Neptali “Boyet” Gonzales Cup at the RTU gym.
Star Group whipped Plainvew Custodial, 76-65 to take the top spot in the nine-team tournament, while Nougat walloped Buklod East, 144-80, for its second win in four matches.
Dennis Rodriguez led Star Group, mentored by Alfred Bartolome and managed by Mike Maneze, to a clean 4-0 win-loss record while dealing Plainview its first loss.
The former Lyceum Pirates standout finished with 24 points, while Virgilio Roque added 16 points for Star Group.
Rodriguez relied on his outside shooting to outmuscle Plainview after a seesaw battle in the first three periods en route to victory.
Jonathan Pinera led Plainview with 15 points, while Babap Sta Maria and Rommel Pingol contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Nougat Candy, meanwhile, scored its victory over Buklod East in a dominating fashion, posting a 53-39 lead at the half and never looked back from there.
Mike Sy finished with 24 points for Nougat, while King Go and Alvin Vitug chipped in 18 and 17 points, respectively.
The tournament is organized by Mikey Perey and supported by Cong. Gonzales and RTU President Jesus Torres.
Former National coach Arlene Rodriguez is the tounament commissioner, while Rene Manlac is the deputy commissioner.
