DAVAO – Tommy Manotoc shot a one-over-par 73 worth 53 points at the heavily-wooded Apo Golf layout yesterday to anchor a Canlubang comeback like no other, as the Sugar Barons successfully defended their PAL Interclub Senior championship title.
The 62-year-old was in a class all himself in the final day as his only birdie for the round, which came on the 17th, practically spelled the three-point difference over Luisita in team play, and the one-point margin in the individual race over Cebu Country Club’s Montito Garcia.
“This is the sweetest,” playing skipper Luigi Yulo said after the celebration near the 18th green, referring to the Sugar Barons’ sixth title in the last seven years. “Who would have thought that we could overhaul a 12-point deficit in the final round against Luisita.”
Burly Tony Olives added 46 and former national champion Rolly Viray accounted for 45 as the Barons closed out with a 144 for 571 overall. Bing Bunye’s 44 was thrown away.
Canlubang completed the comeback because of steady play from almost everyone, something which couldn’t be said of the Luisitans, who skied as a group with the 44 of Francis Gaston enough to lead the squad.
Luisita, which led by 12 after Day 1, blew the same final round lead after Iggy Clavecilla scored just 43 and Rudy Amata 42 for 129. Pepot Inigo did not count with a 41 after a horrid back nine that had him going 11-over.
“I love playing this course,” Manotoc told reporters. “It makes you think.”
Cebu Country Club finished third another two points behind Luisita as Koichi Horii scored 51 points and Clifford Celdran 49. Nonoy Tirol birdied the 18th to complete a 46 and a day-best 146 for the Cebu-based squad.
Meanwhile, Manila Golf, down to three men for the final day at Rancho Palos Verdes, got 43 points from Jaime Fernandez, 42 from Manoling Chan and 40 from Mike Prieto in fashioning out a similar high-wire triumph in Founders Division action.
Manila Golf tallied 125 for the day for 524 overall and a one-point win over Apo Golf even as Eagle Ridge finished third with a 515 tally.
