MOB slams door on Mapua, makes semis

MOB brought down Mapua-Mighty  Sports, 72-68, in a tight and  exciting  contest  to clinch  the  fourth  and  last semis  berth  in the   MBL  Invitational  basketball championship  at the Lyceum gym in  Intramuros, Manila.

Mac Montilla scored 15 points,  including  the  tie-breaking  layup with  30 seconds  left, and Allan Santos had a  key defensive stop  for  MOB, which arranged  a  knockout  semifinal encounter  with  defending   champion and  elimination  round   topnotcher University  of  Santo Toma-Ironcon Builders next week.

John  Umpad added  15  points and  former  national  team standout  Richie   Melencio  contributed 12 points  for  MOB, which  swept its last  five assignments after staritng  0-4.

Jamal Viscarra  contributed 11  points for  MOB, which   played  minus  ex-pro Al Vergara.

Mike Parala  finished   with 16 points and  2011  NCAA  Rookie of   the Year  awardee  Josan   Nimes added 15 points for the  Mighty Sports-supported Cardinals of coach  Chito Victolero.   

Actually, MOB and  Mapua finished   with  identical 5-4  win-loss  slates but the former earned the  fourth and  last semis  berth by  virtue  of   the  winner-over-the-other rule.

Wang’s Ballclub  can  make it a three-way tie for  the   No. 4 spot with a victory over UST-Ironcon at the  close of  the  elimination  round  today.

But  MOB  will still clinch the  No. 4  berth  by virtue of   higher quotient  scores over  Mapua and Wang’s.

At 8-0, UST-Ironcon is already assured of the No. 1 spot in this 10-team  tournament supported  by  Smart  Sports, Cebuana  Lhuillier, Dickies Underwear, PRC  Couriers and Parola Maritime. 

The other semifinal pairing will  pit  No. 2 Jose  Rizal University  (7-2)  against No. 3  Skyforce  (6-3).
