Former NCAA junior MVP Keith Agovida and Rocky Acidre starred as the Arellano University Chiefs upended  the University of the East Warriors, 80-71, yesterday in the quarterfinal round of the the  eighth Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup.

Agovida led with 18 points, while Acidre had 14, and their efforts paid off as the Chiefs caught the last semifinals ticket  at the St. Placide gymnasium inside the San Beda College Manila campus in Mendiola.

With Agovida firing 12 points in the second half, the Chiefs displayed exceptional composure amidst and never relinquished the lead after bouncing back from a 36-43 halftime deficit.

With Dioncee Holt and Adam Serjue backing up Agovida and Acidre in their third quarter assault, the Chiefs managed to maintain a six-point edge, 62-56, at the end of the third.

The Chiefs will meet the National University Bulldogs at 1:30 p.m. when the semis begins on Sunday at the Trinity University of Asia gymnasium in Quezon City.

The defending champion San Beda Red Lions will face the Letran Knights earlier at 12 nn.

In the women’s action, the Lyceum Lady Pirates will collide with the NU Lady Bulldogs at 9 a.m., and the defending champion College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers fight the Adamson Lady Falcons at 10:30 a.m.
