San Miguel Beer eyes its fifth Asean Basketball League (ABL) win as the Beermen go up against the Indonesian Warriors today at the Mahaka Square in Jakarta, Indonesia.
With a 4-2 win-loss card, the Beermen share second place with the Westport Malaysia Dragons behind the AirAsia Philippine Patriots (5-1) following two consecutive wins over the Bangkok Cobras (94-59) and the Saigon Heat (85-62).
The Beermen’s 8 p.m. opponent, the Warriors (3-3), are also on a two-game roll following routs over the Bangkok Cobras (73-57) and the Saigon Heat (96-76). The Warriors’ other victory came at the expense of the Slingers (79-59).
San Miguel Beer coach Bobby Parks is quite worried about the Warriors’ Mario Wuysang, who is the highest-scoring local with an average of 16.5 points per game.
“He (Wuysang) is a very good scorer and we have to look out for him. We don’t want him to get open looks at the basket,”Parks said.
“Indonesia’s win loss record does not show it but the Warriors are a very strong team with a good set of American and Asean imports,”said Parks, referring to former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) import Steve Thomas and Jonathan Larry Smith. Filipino imports for the Indonesian side are Allan Salangsang, Jerick Canada and Marlon Legaspi.
Parks is happy that his players are slowly getting over the slow start syndrome.”We had that in our game against the Saigon Heat and it is a good thing that we made quick adjustments.”
Parks will depend anew on imports Darlon Lamar Johnson and Doug Thomas and locals Froilan Baguion, Benedict Fernandez, Leo Avenido, June Mar Fajardo and RJ Rizada.
