MMA star coming

AFTER Brandon Vera, it’s Mark Munoz’s turn to come over and lend his presence in the Pacific Xtreme Combat (PXC).

The California-based Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) superstar of Filipino descent, is taking part in the 29th edition of one of the country’s top MMA shows as he’ll be working the corner of Raja Shippen, a muay thai specialist who will battle Hawaii-based Filipino Harris Sarmiento in the co-main event of the fight card at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig this Saturday.

The main bout features local bet Ale Cali of Davao going up against Jesse Taitano of Guam for the PXC flyweight title.

Action starts at 7 p.m.

Considered as one of the best middleweight MMA fighters in the world, Munoz, nicknamed the `Filipino Wrecking Machine’, is born to Filipino parents on a U.S. military base in Yokosuka, Japan. By the age of 2, he and his family relocated and settled in Vallejo, California.

Currently ranked fourth as the no. 4 middleweight fighter in the world today, he’s the second Filipino-American MMA star to visit the country after Vera in November last year for PXC28.

Munoz and Shippen have both been training under the Reign Training Center in Orange County, California.

“As a trainer, he’s kind of hard on me, but overall, he’s very, very supportive,” said Shippen when fighters for PXC29, together with event founder EJ Calvo, faced the media over lunch Thursday at Max’s Restaurant in Glorietta.

“But it’s a huge honor training with one of the best fighters in the world, he does brings a lot to the table.”

Calvo said Munoz’s visit here is not purely business, as the former NCAA wrestling champion out of Oklahoma State University also wants to trace his roots in the country.
