Ateneo ousts La Salle

ATENEO advanced to its first baseball finals in the UAAP following a 13-4 eight-inning semifinal victory over De La Salle in Season 64 action yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The Blue Eagles were in total control of the match and already had a nine-run advantage when it started to rain hard.

After 30 minutes, the chief umpire called off the match, giving the victory to Ateneo, which will vie for the crown for the first time since joining the league in 1988.

The Blue Eagles, for finishing second in the eliminations, had a twice-to-beat edge over the Green Archers.

They, however, will have to wait awhile after defending champion University of Santo Tomas stunned top seed National University, 4-2, in the other Final Four duel.

The Growling Tigers and the Bulldogs will vie in a knockout match on Sunday.     “Maganda ang hitting at pitching ni Adrianne (Bernardo),” said Ateneo coach Emer Barandoc.

Dio Remollo slammed a two-run homerun, his second in the season, in the sixth inning as the Blue Eagles to pull away for good, 13-4.A two-run single by Adrianne Bernardo that sent Dio Remollo and  Kirk Long home kicked off the rout with Ateneo posting a 6-0 a dvantage in the first inning.

The Blue Eagles were unstoppable from then on. Charles Catangui unloaded a three-run triple to right field that pushed them further to 10-2 at the bottom third.

Interestingly, Long could become the first UAAP athlete in recent history to win two titles in one season.

He also played for the Ateneo men’s basketball team, which bagged its fourth straight championship this year.

The women’s football matches between Ateneo and UST, as well as Far Eastern University and De La Salle game yesterday at the Ateneo field were rained out and will be played on Wednesday.
