Letran dominates ‘NC’ tennis

Letran capped its domination of tennis after sweeping both the juniors and seniors divisions in the 87th NCAA tournament that concluded yesterday at the Rizal Tennis Center.

The Knights beat the St. Benilde Blazers, 2-0, on victories by Dave Regencia over Larry Antigua, 6-3, 6-0, and Regencia and Bryan Saarenas against Antigua and Rolee Joven, 6-4, 6-1, to snare their fourth straight championship.

The best-of-three showdown thus rendered the Muralla-based school's deciding singles match that would have pitted Jeffrie Jumawan against Rolee Joven of the Blazers non-bearing.

The Squires made it a twin victory after Alberto Lim, Jr. downed San Sebastian's Argil Canizares, 6-3, 6-4, and Lim and Andrew Cano turned back Canizares and John Rey Rudas, 6-3, 6-2, in the doubles.

Andrew Cano and Rudas was supposed to play each other in the other singles match but the two wins rendered it meaningless.

Letran thus went home with its first high school championship since emerging champion a decade back.

Interestingly, it was fitting win for the Muralla-based school that is hosting the 88th NCAA season unfolding this June.
