DEFENDING champion San Beda College nipped St. Benilde, 2-1, to complete a five-game sweep of the first round of the NCAA football tournament yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
The Red Lions remained unbeaten in five matches to retain their lead in the table with 15 points.
Rodane Lario Jr. scored the marginal goal in the 65th minute as Emilio Aguinaldo College nosed out guest squad Lyceum, 1-0, over the weekend at the Philsports pitch.
The Generals took second place with 12 points on a 4-1-0 win-loss-draw record.
Other squads who advanced in the second round which will start tomorrow are St. Benilde and Arellano University.
The Blazers and the Chiefs are in joint third with seven points on an identical 2-1-2 slates.
Meanwhile, titleholder Letran turned back San Beda, 2-1, while St. Benilde clipped San Sebastian College, 2-1, in the tennis competitions yesterday at the nearby Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The Knights and the Blazers clash in their virtual championship match tomorrow, where a victory by the Intramuros-based netters would give them a third straight championship.
Reigning MVP Dave Regencia scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Arjay Cañoza in the first singles before Letran wrapped things up with Regencia and Bryan Saarenas defeating Richard Martinez and Davis Alano, 6-4, 6-4, in their doubles showdown.
St. Benilde relied on victories by Larry Antigua in the first singles and the pair of Antigua and Marco Paolo Suntay to clinch the tie. Theodore P. Jurado
