PH Davis Cuppers take it

THE Philippine Davis Cup team claimed Sunday’s reverse singles and completed a 5-0 sweep of Pacific Oceania in their Asia/Oceania Group 2 tie at the University of Saint Anthony Forum in Iriga City.

Youthful Jason Patrombon blasted Aymeric Mara, 6-0, 6-1, before Johnny Arcilla routed Cyril Jacobe, 6-2, 6-1, in total domination by the host of the visitors from associate member islands in Oceania.

The Filipinos already clinched the tie as early as Saturday when the tandem of Arcilla and Ruben Gonzales survived Jacobe and Daniel Llarena, 6-7 (3), 7-5, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4) during the doubles event Saturday that took almost four hours to complete.

The victory made it a 3-0 lead for the host in the best-of-five tie.

Patrombon opened the PH Davis Cuppers’ campaign with a 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over Jacobe, followed by a 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 triumph of Fil-Am Treat Huey in the second singles match.

The Filipinos will next face the winner of the Pakistan-Lebanon tie.
