4 p.m. – Singapore Slingers vs PH Patriots
SINGAPORE – The AirAsia Philippine Patriots try to firm up their hold of the solo lead when they battle the dangerous Singapore Slingers today in the 3rd AirAsia ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) at the Singapore Indoor Stadium here.
Despite winning their last three games, including against the erstwhile unbeaten Malaysia Dragons, 86-72, the Patriots are expected to meet strong resistance from the Slingers in their 4 p.m. showdown.
The win over the Dragons improved the Patriots’ record to 4-1 but coach Glenn Capacio is not yet comfortable, saying they still need to improve defensively to become more formidable.
”Our success in this tournament will depend on how we play defensively, we have to be rock-solid in that department,” said Capacio.
Aside from imports Anthony Johnson and Nakiea Miller, also expected to deliver for the team co-owned by Harbour Centre Mikee Romero and Tony Boy Cojuangco are Aldrech Ramos, Jonathan Fernandez, Ardy Larong and pint-sized Al Vergara.
Johnson is averaging 25 points a game – second best in the league – while Miller is not only an offensive threat (20 points per game) but also a ferocious rebounder as he normed 13.6 rebound per contest.
The 6-foot-7 Ramos is back after missing the team’s last three games due to a sprained left ankle while Vergara is returning to the Lion City for the first time to bedazzle the team he played for the past two seasons.
”I’m happy that Aldrech is back with the team, he’s a good player but he understands that he has to take it slowly, we’re not yet halfway through the elims so he will have his time,” said Patriots coach Glenn Capacio.
Vergara was awesome in their win over the Dragons as he tallied 13 points and 12 assists.
”We have so many contributors to the team but Al has done well in orchestrating our offensive plays, so I hope he will do the same thing against his former team,” added Capacio. Louis Graham is expected to lead the charge of the host squad along with Fil-Am Donald Dulay.
