The Arellano University Chiefs and the defending champion San Beda Red Lions turned back separate foes in contrasting fashions Wednesday to secured quarterfinal berths in the eighth Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup.
Ex-NCAA junior MVP Keith Agovida scored a go-ahead basket in the final minute, allowing the Chiefs to fend off the Lyceum Philippines University Pirates, 84-82, at the St. Placid gymnasium inside the San Beda College campus in Mendiola, Manila.
The Red Lions, led by Julius Armon with 17 points, pummeled the Angeles University Great Danes, 115-50.
The Chiefs finished the elimination round with a 6-1 win-loss record in Group A, and together with the Red Lions (5-2) and the Pirates (4-3), they formally joined the National University Bulldogs (7-0) in the next round.
