Bulldogs surprise Lions


Kyle Neypes drove in with 7.3 seconds to go, lifting the National University Bulldogs to an 83-81 upset of the defending champion San Beda Red Lions last Sunday in the eighth Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup.

Neypes’ basketball enabled the Bulldogs to finish the elimination round with a clean 7-0 win-loss record, and top Group A when action ended at the Red Lions’ own home court at the San Beda St. Placid gymnasium in Mendiola, Manila.

Meanwhile, the NU Lady Bulldogs won over La Salle-Lipa,  112-31,   and the defending champion College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers tripped the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses, 63-58, to advance to the semifinal round of the women’s division.

The Bulldogs will face fourth seeded Group B qualifier, the Our Lady of Fatima University Phoenix in the quarterfinal round this Saturday at the Trinity University of Asia gymnasium in Quezon City.

Troy Rosario showed the way for the Bulldogs with 17 points, while Alfredo Aroga, who tied match with his triple with 26 ticks left, tallied 13.

The Red Lions,who dropped to third at 4-2 behind the Arellano University Chiefs (5-1), also made it to the quarterfinals with the Lyceum Philippines University Pirates (4-2).
