GRANDMASTER Mark Paragua swept all his matches, 12-0, during a simultaneous chess exhibition against top Sta. Maria players at the Sta. Maria Church yard in Sta. Maria, Bulacan recently.
The one-day event is aimed at promoting chess in the grassroots level, according to tournament director Engineer Norben de Jesus of the Sta. Maria Chess Club.
De Jesus organized the event in cooperation with the Paragua Chess Academy as part of the day-long celebrations of the feast of Immaculada Concepcion, the Patron Saint of Santa Maria, Bulacan.
Paragua, Santa Maria Town Fiesta 2012 president Bobby Nicolas, Dr. Narcisco “Takse” Guevarra, SK chairman and UST player Normel Benigno de Jesus and WFM Michelle Yaon graced the opening rites.
Dr. Johnny Coralles and King Jeremias shared top honors in the Open age category with 6.5 points apiece in seven outings.
Carlo Caranyagan topped the kiddies division with perfect six points.
Second to fifth places with five points each were Juan Carlos Presente, John Ruiz Bravo, Eliseo Budoso and Jan Cedric Gutierrez.
National arbiters Alfredo Chay and Alex Dinoy of the Chess Arbiters Association of the Philippines (CAAP) served as arbiters.
Meanwhile, GM Paragua is scheduled to play another simultaneous chess exhibition matches starting at 8 a.m. today (Thursday, Feb. 9) at the Malate Catholic School.
