NO Floyd Mayweather Jr. No Miguel Cotto.
In the end, Manny Pacquiao had to settle for less.
Tim Bradley gets a crack at the biggest star of boxing today after he was handpicked by the 33-year-old Pacquiao as his opponent in his much-awaited ring return on June 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The 12-round bout is for Pacquiao’s World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title, meaning Bradley, who holds the WBO’s 140-lbs version of the crown, will have to move up in weight class.
A few more details of the negotiations have yet to be finalized, but not unless Bradley’s camp began to act and ask for the moon, the fight is definitely a go.
“We are going to be having further conversations with Bradley and his management early this week and hopefully finalize the deal,” Top Rank president Todd duBoef said over ESPN. “But the truth is my (promotional) agreement with Bradley lays out certain parameters for a Pacquiao fight, so there is a framework already.”
On Pacquiao’s part, everything else has been sealed.
“From our end, the fight is done,” according to Michael Konz, Pacquiao’s close Canadian adviser, as quoted by ESPN boxing columnist Dan Rafael.
“I just got off the phone with (Top Rank's) Bob Arum and Manny, so we're done. I don't assume there will be a problem from the Bradley side. We came to terms with Top Rank on the fight and Manny has approved everything. This morning I had a number of conversations with Bob negotiating the June 9 fight and I relayed everything to Manny.”
Arum and Konz met in San Antonio, Texas over the weekend where Top Rank promoted the middleweight championship encounter between Julio Cesar Chavez and Marco Antonio Rubio.
A co-main event of the fight was the super-bantamweight slugfest between Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. and Nonito Donaire Jr, whose manager, Cameron Dunkin, also calls the shot for Bradley.
Dunkin, Konz, and Arum hooked up with each other shortly after the successful promotion.
The unlikely match up came about after Mayweather and Pacquiao again failed to come to terms – from the purse to the fight date - on a possible mega-bout the entire world has long been waiting.
Cotto was also in the short list provided by Top Rank Promotions chairman Bob Arum as possible Pacquiao opponent, but couldn’t reach an agreement with the great Puerto Rican boxer on what weight they would fight. Since losing a 12th round technical knockout to the `Pacman in 2009, Cotto has moved up to junior middleweight where he now reigns as the World Boxing Association (WBA) champion.
Cotto and Mayweather eventually found themselves on the same level and agreed to fight instead on May 5.
Aside from Bradley, two other fighters considered by the Pacquiao camp were old Mexican nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez, and International Boxing Federation (IBF) light welterweight title holder Lamont Peterson.
But in the end, Pacquiao opted to take on the 28-year-old Bradley, who’s unbeaten in 28 fights, but only has 12 knockouts across his name.
For Konz, Bradley remains a dangerous opponent.
“Bradley is a young, undefeated fighter who deserves a chance,” he said of the Southern California native.
A less-stellar fighter, Bradley signed up with Top Rank last year and was immediately made the main undercard of the Pacquiao-Sugar Shane Mosley welterweight fight in May, stopping former lightweight champion Joel Casamayor in the eight round of a lopsided title match.
