Terrence Romeo shot 18 points as the Far Eastern University Tamaraws outplayed the University of the East Warriors, 65-53, last Saturday in the 8th Fr.Martin Collegiate Open Cup at the Arellano University gymnasium in Legarda, Manila.
Romeo led three other teammates in scoring crucial baskets in a decisive first period blast which enabled the Tams to formally secure the second Group B quarterfinal slot.
He combined for 17 points with Cris Tolomia, Rey Mark Belo and Ryan Mendoza in the first 10 minutes of the match, and as the Tams limited UE to just 10 points, FEU had little trouble ending the elimination round with a 5-2 win-loss record.
The early qualifying Letran Knights, who are already assured of themselves of a quarterfinals berth, forfeited a fight-marred game with the Emilio Aguinaldo College-Manila Generals.
The Knights, who finished Group B with a 6-1 card, got into a bench-clearing brawl with the Generals with 7:22 left in the second quarter.
The game was called off after commissioner Aric del Rosario threw out all players involved in the fistfights.
Meanwhile, the PCCL champion San Sebastian Stags sneaked past the STI Olympians, 78-74, while the Informatics Icons won over the Angeles University Foundation Great Danes, 74-63.
