UNIVERSITY of Perpetual Help System Dalta seeks its first-ever NCAA women’s volleyball title today at the expense of Letran as the two teams play Game 2 of the their title series today at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
The Lady Altas were severely challenged by the Lady Knights before escaping with a 25-16, 23-25, 25-27, 25-20, 15-10 victory in the opener of the best-of-three Finals last Friday.
The host school is actually on track for a double championship as the Altas defeated San Beda Red Lions, 28-26, 25-22, 25-22, and moved closer in clinching a second straight men’s title.
The Perpetual Help-Letran duel is set at 3:30 p.m., while the Altas and the Red Lions take to the floor at 2 p.m.
MVP contender Sandra delos Santos, Honey Royse Tubino, Norie Diaz, Janice Abar, Arianne Argarin, and libero Angelique Dionela will lead the Lady Altas’ onslaught.
Delos Santos, Tubino and Diaz combined for 54 hits in the opener.
With a 13-game winning run, Perpetual Help seeks to become the first team to complete an unbeaten season after multi-titled San Sebastian last did the trick in 2008.
“Pipilitin namin tapusin sa Game 2 para wala nang Game 3,” said Lady Altas coach Mike Rafael.
The Lady Knights were actually in full control, taking two of the first three sets and were gaining headway, 12-5 early in the fourth frame when they suddenly fell into a maze of error that led to their defeat.
Letran will pin its hopes on veterans Manel Carolino, Gena Andaya, Sarah Espelita, Melissa Cu, Lalaine Villarin, and Justyne Mae Tadeo.
“Nag-relax sila noong fourth set, hindi na nasunod ’yung game plan tapos ang dami naming errors sa service at receive,” admitted Lady Knights coach Brian Esquibel.
“Kailangan na lang naming makabawi, wala na kaming choice dahil wala na kaming bukas,” he added.
A Letran victory would send the finals series to a decider on Friday.
