London-bound paralympics stars show fine form

LONDON  Paralympics-bound Roger Tapia of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte  and Isidro Vildosola of Koronadal City warmed  up for coming  international tournaments by winning gold medals at the start of the  athletics competition of the  first PSC-Philspada National Games at the Marikina Sports Park in Marikina City.

Tapia, who is already qualified  for the 100m and 200m events of the  2012 London Paralympics in August, bagged the gold in the 100m run Friday afternoon and the 200m run   Saturday morning.

The 21-year-old varsity runner from Jose Rizal University clocked 11.1 seconds in the century dash and 23.8 seconds in the 200m. He is slated to run in the 400m race today.

Vildosola, a 1,500m event qualifier to the London Games, timed two minutes and 18.5 seconds in the 800m run on Friday. He is also favored to win the gold in the 1,500m.

Tapia, Vildosola and the rest of the Philspada track and field team are heading to Kuala Lumpur in April where Vildosola is targeting a Paralympics slot for the 800m and 42.195-km marathon events.

“Malaki chance natin sa marathon pag nag-qualify ako,” said the 35-year-old Vildosola, a former Milo Marathon leg champion.

Both Tapia and Vildosola are competing in the F46 classification (one-arm amputee).

F45 (two-arm amputee) runner Mark Anthony Bergado also stamped his class in the 100m and 200m races of the games being organized by the Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled-National Paralympics Committee of the Philippines (Philspada-NPC Phils).

Meanwhile,  in discus throw, Evaristo Carbonel captured the gold in the F11 class with a throw of 26.14 meters; Allan Espanol ruled the F12-13 categories at 18.01 meters; Gerardo Regalado topped the F46 classification at 12.72 meters; Dave Salanda ruled the F44 group at 15.05 meters; and Michael Ignatius Mora dominated the F20 field at 26.38 meters.
