SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Seething in anger, Filipino Nonito Donaire Jr. can’t wait to climb the ring Saturday night (Sunday noon, Manila time) and challenge for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-bantamweight title.
And Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. better watch out.
Still furious over what he felt had been an obvious disrespect on him by his Puerto Rican foe, Donaire vowed to bring everything on when he battles Vazquez Jr. in a 12-round bout at the Alamadome here in the undercard of the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr-Marco Antonio Rubio middleweight title match for the World Boxing Council (WBC) championship.
“What I’ve heard so far is music to my ears,” said Donaire on the eve of the fight. “What they’ve said has really fired me up.”
A heated exchange of words in the week leading to the match has left the former two-time world champion from the Philippines upset against the wily Puerto Rican, son and namesake of former three-division world champion Wilfredo Vazquez.
The discord between the two was first sparked by a shout-out made by Vazquez’s wife on her Twitter account, saying Donaire is scared of her husband.
The incident later escalated when Vazquez tried to move Donaire’s cap when the two posed for a face-off during the final press conference of the fight promotion. In turn, the Filipino pulled off the skull-cap of the Puerto Rican, igniting a shoving and shouting exchanges between the two camps.
Nothing of such nature took place during Friday’s official weigh-in at the same Texas arena when Donaire came in at 121 1/2 lbs, and Vazquez at exactly 122.
But Donaire remains focused and confident he’ll shut the lights out of his cocky opponent.
“I am ready because this guy (Vazquez) is a braggart. I want to put him in his place,” said the Filipino, born in Talibon, Bohol, but now based in California.
“I have never been angry as much as I am now, but I realize that I need to relax and just follow my game plan.”
Donaire, holder of a 27-1 record, with 18 KOs, is on a nine-year win streak. He previously held the International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight crown, and recently, the World Boxing Council (WBC) and WBO bantamweight titles.
The 29-year-old Filipino is coming off a 12-round unanimous decision over Omar Narvaez of Argentina to retain his bantamweight belts, before deciding to move up in weight just before 2011 was over.
Vazquez has a record of 21-1-1, with 18 KOs, and once held the WBO super-bantamweight crown, which he lost to Jorge Arce in a 12-round technical knockout in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Sugar Shane Mosley welterweight title match.
Veteran referee Rafael Ramos will be the third man on the ring, while the three judges scoring the bout are Levi Martinez of New Mexico, Donald Trella of Connecticut and Ruben Garcia of Texas.
The main event will have the unbeaten Cesar Chavez Jr hoping to go one step further than his legendary fighting father by winning a world title fight here.
The arena It is the same venue where Chavez’s father fought to a 12-round draw with Pernell Whitaker in 1993. Julio Cesar Sr is not only a former six-time world champ but is considered the greatest fighter to ever come out of Mexico.
But Julio Cesar Jr isn’t trying to emulate senior Chavez. His immediate concern is holding onto his title by beating Rubio so he can keep his undefeated 44-0-1 record intact.
“This fight will leave no doubt that I am the top middleweight in the world,” Chavez said.
