Donaire, Vasquez rarin’ to mix it up

THE much-awaited fight between Filipino Nonito Donaire and Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. for the vacant WBO junior featherweight title is still a day away.

But judging from their behavior Thursday night in their final media conference, the two fighters cannot wait any longer.

Donaire and Vazquez, Jr. came face-to-face and taunted at each other with their jaws, exposing the enormous amount of animosity they have against each other that’s definitely expected to spill into the ring when they finally come to blows tomorrow at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Finally, the bout that has seen minimal pre-fight drama witnessed one, and no fighter was willing to allow the other to take the limelight in the press gathering intended to add interest to the bout serving as an undercard to the WBC middleweight clash between champion Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. and challenger Marco Antonio Rubio.

Donaire’s and Vazquez’s eyes didn’t blink when their faces came within centimeters apart, before the two boxers posed before photographers with their fists clenched.

Vazquez would later on call this fight as his most critical in his career.

“It’s probably the most important fight of my career,” said Vazquez through an interpreter. “With this fight, I will be in a position a lot higher than what I think. And I prepared myself with confidence to do it.”

Vazquez, the son of a former world champion who has an impressive record of 19 wins – 16 by way of knockouts – one loss and a draw, had already predicted a win by a knockout against the Filipino boxer.

But the three-division champion Donaire merely repelled the ambition of his Puerto Rican opponent by saying: “Bring it on!”

In fact, Donaire even loves the idea of Vazquez climbing into the ring with the sole purpose of
moving forward and not backing away.

“I’m glad he intends to engage me in a brawl,” said Donaire, who already has 27 wins in 28 fights. “It’s not going to be a boring fight.  It would be better for him not to hide. I like this even more.”
