8:30  p.m. --    Mapua-Mighty Sports vs. Investwell

JOSE  Rizal  University   stakes its unbeaten   record  and a  share of the lead  when it  takes on  unpredictable   Skyforce  today in  the MBL  Invitational  basketball  championships at the  JRU gym in Shaw  Blvd., Mandaluyong City.

The  Heavy Bombers, who are looking  for  their first  major championship under PBA legend-turned-coach  Vergel Meneses, gun  for  their seventh  straight win against Skyforce in  the  7 p.m. encounter.

“The players are in good shape right now and we’ll definitely  go for  the   win  even  if  we’re already  assured of   semis berths,” said  Meneses, known as the “Aeriel Voyager” during his playing days.

JRU is currently tied for the top  spot   with  defending   champin University of  Santo Tomas-Ironcon  Builders with 6-0 win-loss  slates in this 10-team, single-round  tournament supported by  Smart Sports, Cebuana Lhuillier, Dickies Underwear, PRC  Couriers  and  Parola Maritime.

Nate  Matute,  Ralph  Monserat and  Decoy Lopez  will lead the campaign of  the  Heavy Bombers, who are coming off  a smashing 101-81  win  over  fellow  NCAA campaigner  Lyceum of  the  Philippines-Yummy  Hotdogs last week.

Skyforce, on the other hand, is hoping to follow-up its hard-earned  99-92   win  over Investwell last  Saturday  and  keep its slim hopes  of making  it to the next round  alive.

Ex-pro  Jeff  Sanders  will carry the fight  for   the   June   Longalong-mentored   Skyforce, along with MC Caceres, Ismael Junio, Arnold  Sta. Maria and  former MBL  MVP  Leimar Navarro.

In  the 8:30 p.m. second game,  Mapua-Mighty  Sports tries to solidify its hold on the No. 4 spot when it squares off with Investwell.

Handled  by coach  Chito Victolero and supported by Mighty  Sports, the Cardinals have a 4-3 slate in  a  tie with  former National  Interclub champion  Wang’s Ballclub for the fourth spot..

The  Cardinals, however, hold the tiebreaker  against  Wang’s following a thrilling  92-91 win  over  the  Mandaluyong-based  team last week.

Tournament director is Albert Andaya, while commissioner is Ato Tolentino.
