I am in the best of shape: Donaire

A word war that erupted between the camps of Nonito Donaire Jr. and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. could just be a prelude to a seething slugfest in their World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-bantamweight title fight this Saturday (Sunday, Manila time) at the Alamodome in Texas.

Apparently, one daring message on twitter courtesy of Vazquez’s wife had the `Filipino Flash’ annoyingly responding back, but in a manner epitomizing him as a former two-time world champion.

In his account, Donaire, 29, twitted, “Ok, didn’t know Vazquez’s wife talks crap, when WV2 (Wilfredo Vazquez Jr) doesn’t.”

The Filipino boxing star is obviously reacting to an earlier twit made by Jacklyn Roman, wife of Vazquez Jr., who told Donaire, `Your scared! See you there!

Although obviously irritated, Donaire said he’d rather not be dragged in a heated exchange of words, and instead, will just look forward at meeting the Puerto Rican namesake and son of former world champion Wilfredo Vazquez, this weekend in San Antonio.

“My wife and I have had nothing but respect for WV2, but if you all wanna talk crap, go ahead. I’m not like that,” Donaire said.

Vazquez’s wife allegedly only reacted on an earlier twit reportedly posted by Rachel Donaire, Nonito’s wife. But the Filipino couple denied having ever talked about or better yet, badmouthed Vazquez in social networking sites.

“Ok, like I said bro, I respected you and your dad. I don’t know why it turned to trash talking. But either way, I look forward to fighting someone like you,” added Donaire, the former flyweight and bantamweight champion of the world.

The exchange of twits further pumped up Donaire for the 12-round bout that co-headlines the World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight championship match between undefeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Marco Antonio Rubio.

Unlike his previous title fights, Donaire (27-1, 18 KOs) admitted he has no problem making the 122-lbs. weight limit this time.

The California-based Filipino even had the benefit of taking dinner now as he did for two straight days at Joe’s Crab Shack.

“It feels good to eat everything and anything,” said Donaire, who arrived in the heart of Texas a day ahead of Vazquez.

After working out at the ChampionFit gym Tuesday, Donaire declared himself in the `best shape’ of his career.

“I feel so strong. I’m untouchable,” he told ABS-CBN reporter Dyan Castillejo later on.

Donaire has not lost in the last 10 years, a stretch that saw him on a 25-fight win streak, including a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision against Omar Andres Narvaez in his last bout four months ago at the Madison Square Garden in New York to successfully retain his WBO and WBC bantamweight titles.

In contrast, Vazquez (21-1, 18 KOs), suffered his first career loss just a year ago, a 12-round technical knockout against tough Mexican Jorge Arce to yield his WBO super-bantamweight crown.

But he’s coming off a third-round demolition of Roberto Carlos Leyva also last October.
