Adamson stays clean in softball

Defending champion Adamson scored an abbreviated 9-0 win over Ateneo yesterday in the UAAP Season 74 women’s softball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

The victory was the seventh straight for the Lady Falcons, most of whom donned the colors of the Blu Girls, who won the 26th Southeast Asian Games gold medal in Indonesia last November.

University of the Philippines, on the other hand, recovered from two runs down and poured it all in three extra innings to escape with an 8-6 victory over University of Santo Tomas in the other match.

With the win, the Lady Maroons shadowed the Lady Falcons at second spot with a 6-1 won-lost record.

University of the East defeated La Salle, 6-1, for its third win in seven outings in the other softball game. The Lady Eagles and Lady Archers tote 1-6 and 0-7 records, respectively.

In men’s volleyball at the San Juan Arena, JR Labrador made 26 hits and Kirk Beliran had 16 points as Far Eastern University (10-2) earned the first semifinals slot with a 20-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 15-11 victory over De La Salle (6-5).

Reyson Fuentes and Rueben Inaudito, meanwhile, combined for 23 points in helping National University (7-5) stay in contention for the men’s volleyball Final Four via a 25-23, 25-14, 25-14 win over UE (0-12).

Michelle Lentija and Elvie Entria each had three runs for the Lady Falcons, who could retain the crown outright if they win their last three matches in the eliminations.

Julie Marie Muyco and Rizza Bernardino also sparkled at the mound with four and three strikeouts, respectively.

The Lady Maroons relied on Jill Tanaka and pitcher Gen Ytario in wearing down the stubborn Tigresses.

UP fell behind at 3-5 and was on the brink of losing when UST was at bat with one out in the bottom seventh inning. But luckily for the Lady Maroons, the Espana-based softbelles collapsed in all cylinders and Diliman batters gor their acts together to force the extra innings.
