CEBU City – Unbeaten Milan Melindo outclassed Mexican Juan Esquer as he scored a resounding technical knockout in their 12-round flyweight fight Saturday night that showcased his readiness to challenge for a world title.
Punishing his 25-year-old opponent with crisp jabs and deadly hooks, Melindo was in control for most of the fight that served as the main event of ‘Pinoy Pride XI: Philippines vs. The World’ boxing promotion before a jampacked crowd at the Pacific Ballroom of the Waterfront Hotel and Casino here.
The end came at the 2:16 mark of the seventh round when Esquer landed an obvious low blow. But as referee Danrex Tapdasan tried to separate the two fighters, the Mexican surprisingly fell to the canvass.
Melindo, 23, retained his World Boxing Organization (WBO) Intercontinental flyweight title and improved his record to 26-0, with 10 KOs.
