AN error prone La Salle team still proved too much against University of Santo Tomas.
The defending champions used their height advantage to the hilt to turn back the Tigresses, 25-20, 25-22, 25-13, and secure the semifinals bonus in a duel of two traditional powerhouse teams in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
La Salle stretched its winning run to 11 as it pulled away once more from rival Ateneo, which remains in second with a 9-2 mark.
The Lady Archers won in straight sets despite allowing the Tigresses to collect 31 points off turnovers.
“Sinabi ko sa mga bata na isipin na lang nila kung saan tayo nagka-mali, especially sa service, doon na lang tayo bumawi. Mabuti at nag-respond sila sa pamamagitan ng magandang blocking at receiving,” said La Salle mentor Ramil de Jesus.
Earlier, Far Eastern University moved closer in clinching the third Final Four berth with a 26-24, 25-17, 25-17 decision over the University of the Philippines.
“Gusto naming makuha yung No. 3, pero kung may tsansa na makapuwesto sa No. 2, bakit hindi. We wanted na magkaroon ng mataas na rankings sa susunod na round,” said Lady Tamaraws coach Nes Pamilar.
FEU, seeking to make a return stint in the semis after a two-year absence, improved to 7-4, holding a one-game lead over Adamson and UST, both sharing fourth place at 6-5.
The Lady Tamaraws are trailing two games behind the Lady Eagles in the race for the second twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four.
Rookie Ara Galang fired 12 hits, while skipper Cha Cruz added 11 points for the Lady Archers, who registered seven blocks.
