No denying ‘El Granada’

GARY David is not only a scoring champion. He now has an honour of being the best of them all.

Powerade’s top gunner finally squeezed his way into an elite club last night, winning the PBA Philippine Cup Best Player of the Conference award.

David, the 10th pick overall way back in 2004 by Coca-Cola, beat Petron’s Arwind Santos and Alex Cabagnot, James Yap of B-Meg and fellow Tiger Marcio Lassiter.

David collected 1,268 equivalent points to beat Santos by merely 109 points. Cabagnot wound up with 569, Yap 464 and Lassiter 454.

The former Comeback Player of the Year by the PBA Press Corps, who averaged 25 points through 21 games in the tournament and who scored at least 30 in six straight matches in the playoffs, amassed 411 points value in statistical points, 568 from the media, 139 from the players and 150 from the PBA Commissioner’s Office.

This is David’s first major individual award. In 2006, he was part of the First Mythical Team when he was still with Air21.

Santos, who lost the MVP race last season to Jimmy Alapag in one of the tightest battles, was the No. 1 player in the statistical points (446) but was a far second in the media votes with 380. He won the votes from the players with 258 and came in second in the Commissioner’s with 75 for 1159.
