MULTI-titled Chiang Kai Shek College posted its first back-to-back win by downing St. Jude Catholic School, 75-55, while St. Stephen’s High School finally picked up its first victory in the 42nd Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association Tuesday at the Uno High School gym.
Drawing another inspired plays from Kimlee Bayquin, Joshua Tan and John Kevin Baytan, the Blue Dragons came through with several offensive spurts in the third quarter, including a 6-0 run, to finally pull away from the Judenites.
After the Blue Dragons took a 36-31 lead, the Judenites started to crumble, making hurried shots to the disappointment of their new coach – former La Salle star Cholo Villanueva.
Bayquin had another double-double performance with 19 points and 12 rebounds aside from posting four assists and three steals for the 14-time champion Blue Dragons while Tan and Baytan had 17 markers each and combined for 20 boards.
The Judenites even had more attempts from the three-point area, 41 (made seven), than from the two-point area, 36 (made nine) for a horrendous.208 (16-for-77) shooting clip.
The Stephenians, on the other hand, also leaned on a big third quarter salvo to frustrate host Grace Christian College , 72-61, in the tournament presented by Regan Industrials Sales Inc. and World Balance.
It was the first win in three starts for St. Stephen’s which drew 31 points from Pierre Chan highlighted by eight triples while the defeat was the third straight for the host squad which showed up with a new coach in former UP mentor Lito Vergara.
Meantime, leader Hope Christian High School shoots for its fourth straight win against the host squad tomorrow in the tournament also backed by Uratex, Burlington, Summit Drinking Water, 100 Plus, Supreme Steel Pipe, Superior Pipe, Ace Water Spa and Molten.
