60-40? No way--Pacman

FIRST, the drug test. Then the fight date. Now, it’s the fight purse.

Short of referring to it as ridiculous, Manny Pacquiao flatly rejected the latest offer of mortal rival Floyd Mayweather Jr. for a 60-40 sharing of the huge sum of money expected to be generated from a mega- fight pitting the two boxing superstars.

The reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion remained steadfast in his stand that the split in the purse should be on a 50-50 basis and nothing less.

“Gusto niya bigyan na lang ako ng $40 million, pero the rest sa kanya na. Hindi naman yata tama yun,” said Pacquiao from General Santos City Wednesday afternoon.

Mayweather, 34, insisted that he received the larger chunk of the earnings from a potential meeting with the Filipino ring icon, which many around the world believe would go down as the biggest and richest in boxing history.

Initially, the undefeated American, who holds the World Boxing Council (WBC) version of the 147 lbs. division, proposed a 70-30 sharing, but upped the ante the other day to 60-40.

But Pacquiao made known that he’s not amenable to the proposal, the latest stumbling block to hinder the much-awaited fight from ever happening.

“Lumalabo,” was how Pacquiao described the possibility of fighting Mayweather the soonest possible time.

Disagreement in the drug testing procedure which Mayweather suggested both fighters undertake before and shortly after the fight, torpedoed the original negotiations for the fight three years ago.

Just three weeks ago, Mayweather challenged Pacquiao to make the bout happen on May 5, just a month short before the brash-talking American begin serving his 90-day jail term on account of misdemeanor and battery charges.

But Pacquiao and his promoter, Top Rank chairman Bob Arum said they are amenable to a match with Mayweather provided that it be moved to as late as May 26, a date which Floyd Jr. naturally declined, insisting he’ll only fight on May 5.
