Mexican fighters ready vs Pinoys

THEY come here to fight, and they come here to win.

Mexicans Juan Esquer and Diego Ledesma vowed to put on a show by beating their respective Filipino opponents in this weekend’s Pinoy Pride XI: Philippines vs. The World’ at the Cebu City Waterfront Hotel and Casino.

Esquer faces unbeaten, world rated Milan Melindo (25-0, 9 KOs) in a 12-round flyweight bout that serves as the main event of the boxing card presented by ALA Promotions and giant network ABS-CBN.

Ledesma, meanwhile, is also up against another undefeated local bet in Lorenzo Villanueva (21-0, 20 KOs) as they square off in a 10-round match set at featherweight.

Both Esquer and Ledesma said they are unfazed with the awesome records of their Filipino opponents as they have nothing but victory in their minds.”

“Melindo is in for a big surprise,” said Esquer through his trainer Edmundo Gaitan as the Mexican team, accompanied by ALA Promotions vice-president Dennis Canete, was presented to the media Tuesday at Shakey’s U.N. Ave.

“Esquer has fought six world champions. He comes here to fight. He comes here well prepared to fight. He doesn’t care if it is by knockout or by decision. He comes here to win.”

Esquer, 25, from Sonora, Mexico, has fought the likes of former World Boxing Organization (WBO) light-flyweight champion Ivan Calderon of Puerto Rico, Hernan `Tyson’ Marquez, Carlos Tamara, among others.

He has a ring record of 27-9, with 21 KOs, and is dubbed `Panterita’, since according to Gaitan, “Esquer is an aggressive fighter like a wild animal in Mexico called Panterita.”

Ledesma, also 25 but from Sinaloa, Mexico, has yet to encounter world-class opponents like Esquer, although he packs a record of 18-4, with 12 KOs.

“Yes, I expect a brawl,” said Ledesma through his trainer Juan Paredes. “I expect a knockout during the fight because both of us love to brawl.”
