FAR Eastern University and Adamson boosted their respective ‘Final Four’ bids after posting contrasting victories yesterday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

In a duel of the league’s top two winningest teams, the Lady Tamaraws survived University of Santo Tomas, 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-23, while the Lady Falcons made short work of University of the Philippines, 25-15, 25-9, 25-23.

FEU ace spiker Rosemarie Vargas drained in a career-high 27 points, the second highest scoring output of the season behind the 30 hits by Alyssa Valdez in Ateneo’s four-set triumph of National University last Saturday.

Pau Soriano delivered with 15 hits, including five blocks, while Shiela Pineda added 10 points for Adamson, which won its last two assignments.

The Lady Tamaraws and the Lady Falcons improved to 6-4 card, moving half a game ahead over the fifth-running Tigresses, who now have a 5-4 record, in the race for the last semifinals berth.

“Nagtulong-tulong kami sa panalong ito.  May natutunan ang mga bata sa pagkatalo (straight sets) namin sa La Salle,” said FEU coach Nes Pamilar.

Wenneth Eulalio contributed 14 hits, including the match-winning kill for the Lady Tamaraws, and Mayjorie Roxas had 13 points, including three service aces.

Vargas, a sophomore who took charge of FEU’s offense after Maica Morada left the team midway in the eliminations, was impressive on both offense and defense by registering four service aces, two blocks and 12 digs.

Maru Banaticla led the way for UST with 20 points while Maika Ortiz added 15 hits.

Angeli Araneta finished with seven markers while Joyce Palad, South Ramos and Princess Se chipped in five hits apiece for the Lady Maroons.

Winless in nine matches, UP joins NU (1-9) in an early vacation.

In men’s division, Red Christensen and Myco Antonio scored 15 hits apiece as La Salle (6-3) turned back UE (0-10), 25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21.

Jeffrey Lansangan and Sam Paquiz drilled in 18 hits apiece while Mico Lucindo had 17 points to help UP (5-4) slip past Ateneo (1-9), 24-26, 18-25, 25-16, 25-21, 15-12.
