THREE-PEAT seeking La Salle duplicated the feat set by its men’s counterparts as the Lady Archers nosed out Ateneo, 3-2, for a first round sweep of the UAAP tennis tournament yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
La Salle, the league’s winningest squad with six championships, won all of its three assignments.
Reigning MVP Reggie Santiago never lost a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lady Eagles netter Bea Santos in the deciding singles for the Lady Archers to escape with the victory in the event sponsored by Dunlop Fort Elite 3.
Other La Salle winners were Martina Guba, who blanked Isabelle Lim, 6-0, 6-0, in the first singles, and the doubles tandem of Trudy Amoranto and Kirstie Barraquias, who routed Nikki Angelo and Jessica Lagman, 6-1, 6-1.
University of the Philippines placed second after edging University of Santo Tomas, 3-2, in the other distaff side tie.
The Lady Maroons, who have a 2-1 card, relied on the brilliant performances of singles players JV Custodio, who hammered out a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Zaza Paulino, Zhane Quitara over Linda Santos, 7-5, 6-2, and Sarah Jane Restuaro against Hazel Grecia, 6-2, 6-0.
The Tigresses fell into third place with a 1-2 record.
In baseball, Ateneo crushed titleholder UST, 8-1, as it neared a rare first round sweep at the nearby Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
The Blue Eagles, who are in their best start since joining the league in 1978, used their strong batting in the eighth inning by scoring five runs courtesy of Charles Altomonte, Adriane Bernardo, Luke Bernardo, Matt Laurel and Charles Catangui.
The Blue Eagles round up their first round assignments against the Green Archers on Thursday.
National University downed Adamson, 2-0.
The Bulldogs are now tied with the Growling Tigers at 2-2 mark, while the Falcons fell to 1-3.
In men's football, UST defeated Ateneo, 2-0 to seize the solo lead at the Ateneo High School Field.
The Growling Tigers now have seven points with their 2-1-0 win-draw-loss records to remain tied on top.
UST were in full control of the first half, with Fidel Kue breaking the ice on the 14th minute, followed by a 22nd minute goal by Christian de De Juan, his second of the tournament.
