DEFENDING champion La Salle inched closer in claiming a twice-to-beat edge in the semifinals by clobbering University of the East, 25-22, 25-18, 25-18, yesterday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Michelle Gumabao finished with 11 hits, including two service aces, while Cha Cruz contributed nine markers as the Lady Archers rolled to their 10th consecutive victory.

Later in the day, Alyssa Valdez dropped a season-high 30 points as Ateneo dumped National University, 25-7, 25-20, 17-25, 25-19, to move a win away from clinching a berth in the semis.

The Lady Eagles, seeking a fourth Final Four stint in five seasons, hiked their record to 7-2.

Valdez shattered the old team record of 29 hits by Charo Soriano, now an assistant to coach Roger Gorayeb, in Ateneo’s 25-22, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22 win over University of the Philippines on Jan. 16, 2008.    (Theodore P. Jurado)
