College best for 2011 honored tonight

THE top varsity achievers of 2011 gather tonight for the Collegiate Basketball Awards presented by the UAAP-NCAA Press Corps and SMART.

Ateneo's Kiefer Ravena, Blue Eagles coach Norman Black, and San Beda mentor Frankie Lim lead the 18 awardees to be feted by the group of scribes from various broadsheets, tabloids and online publications regularly covering the varsity beat.

The formal event is slated at 7 p.m. at the Gateway Suites of the Araneta Center.

Ravena is the recipient of the SMART Most Valuable Player award for his achievements both on and off the court, while Black and Lim will get the Coach of the Year honors for steering their teams to the championship of their respective leagues.

The 18-year-old Ravena is also a part of the prestigious Collegiate Mythical Five together with Ateneo teammate Greg Slaughter, San Sebastian's Calvin Abueva, San Beda's Garvo Lanete and National University's Bobby Ray Parks, Jr.

Players from the four-time UAAP champion Blue Eagles will also be honored, including Nico Salva (Pivotal Player), Emman Monfort (Maynilad Super Senior) and Kirk Long (Defensive Stopper).
